Is Speed Really The Issue?

It's possible that your website loads OK and that users can easily view the content but when was the last time you checked? When was the last time you checked on mobile? And when was the last time you checked on mobile with a poor connection?

You might not need a website that loads fast on mobile, perhaps you do. That's what we'll cover briefly here.

Why Are They Leaving?

If you take a moment to log in to your Google Analytics account and just take a quick look at the "Audience // Overview" report you might be shocked when you look at your bounce rate.

This is the percentage of people who hit a page on your site (the home page or any landing page) and then leave. They don't look at anything else.

It's possible that the site simply isn't what they were looking for, or that they got what they needed (a contact number perhaps) and then closed the browser.

Is Speed The Issue?

One significant factor in why people leave websites is due to the speed of that website. Imagine waiting for a bus, it can feel like that; especially on a poor mobile connection.

You can check this quickly in your Google Analytics by going to the following report: "Behaviour // Site Speed // Overview". Your average page load time might be high but that could well be due to the users' connections. There are a whole heap of variables to consider between the server and the end user's device so I wouldn't get too hung up on that figure as it can be high. I would focus instead on the average page download time.

Other figures that you can have some control over and change are the server response times and connection times, especially if you are using shared hosting resources (as many people do).

What Can I Do?

The first thing you can do is contact your hosting company and ask if they can help, they may well be able to.

If you know how to or have a web designer on your team then compressing the files your website sends to the browser can certainly help (although this is a little technical) and resizing images before uploading them to the server can also help.

One thing we have found is that just transferring users to our service helps as we do not use shared servers. We have dedicated VPS servers that are optimised to deliver websites fast and compressed.
